Thanlyin is situated at the confluence of the Yangon and Bago Rivers. To the south of Thanlyin is a ridge named Utaringa Kon, better known locally as Shin Mwe Nun Kon, on which Kyaik Khauk Pagoda stands. The colonial town of Syriam was built by the British for its port and petroleum refinery plant. Today a sleepy town, it is a 30-minute drive from downtown Yangon across a 2-kilometer bridge.
Thanlyin Township comprises 17 quarters and 28 village tracts. And it has the largest port in the country, Thilawa port and is a major port city of Myanmar. Thanlyin Yaele pagoda and Kyaik-khauk Sandawshin pagoda are located in Thanlyin. Kyaik-khauk Buddha festival is famous and celebrated every year. There are also 4 Universities in this township, University of East Yangon and Technological University Thanlyin, Myanmar Maritime University and the Co-operative University of Thanlyin.
